The power of obedience to parents lies in gratitude — a form of worship that connects us directly to Allah’s mercy.
Serving, thanking, and praying for our parents is among the most beloved deeds to Allah and a key to blessings in this life and the next.
Verse:
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”
(Surah Luqman 31:14)
Tafsir Insight:
Ibn Kathir explains that Allah linked gratitude to parents with gratitude to Himself — a clear sign of their immense rights.
The mother bears hardship in pregnancy, delivery, and nursing; the father provides, protects, and sustains.
True righteousness is shown through kind words, dutiful actions, and sincere dua — all reflecting the power of obedience to parents.

“The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the father, and the displeasure of Allah is in the displeasure of the father.”
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 1899 – Hasan Sahih)
Narrated by Abdullah ibn ‘Amr and authenticated by al-Albani.
This hadith highlights that obeying and honoring one’s parents is not just kindness — it is obedience to Allah Himself.

Question: Which is greater — obedience to parents or striving in jihad?
Answer:
If jihad is voluntary and parents need their child, then serving the parents takes precedence.
The Prophet ﷺ said to a man seeking permission for jihad:
“Are your parents alive?”
He said: Yes.
The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Then strive in their service.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5972)
This shows the power of obedience to parents — a lifelong form of striving that earns the same reward as jihad.

Call or visit your parents today — not to ask for something, but to simply say:
“Jazakum Allahu khayran for everything you’ve done for me.”
Even a short dua,
“Rabb irhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira”
(My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small)
is an act of birr that lives on even after they pass — a daily reminder of the power of obedience to parents.
When was the last time you made sincere dua for your parents — both in life and after death?
Reflect on how the power of obedience to parents can bring peace to your home and light to your heart.
