Al Isra wal Miraj: A Miraculous Night That Changed History

Al Isra wal Miraj is one of the most powerful and miraculous events in Islamic history. It was not merely a journey across distance, but a journey of faith, healing, elevation, and divine reassurance that continues to guide the Ummah until today.

This extraordinary night came at a time of deep pain for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, reminding believers that when human support fades, divine support never does.

What Is Al Isra wal Miraj?

Al Isra wal Miraj refers to a two-part miracle granted to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in a single night:

  • Al Isra: The Night Journey from Makkah to Jerusalem

  • Al Miraj: The Ascension from Jerusalem through the heavens

Both stages are confirmed by the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah and represent one of the greatest miracles after the revelation of the Qur’an itself.

👉 Unlike common misconceptions, Al Isra wal Miraj was a physical and spiritual journey, not a dream or vision.

Why Al Isra wal Miraj Happened During the Year of Sorrow

The timing of Al Isra wal Miraj carries deep meaning. It occurred after ʿĀm al-Ḥuzn (The Year of Sorrow), when the Prophet ﷺ experienced:

  • The death of his wife Khadijah (رضي الله عنها)

  • The loss of his uncle Abu Talib

  • Public rejection and physical harm in Ta’if

  • Severe hardship in spreading the message of Islam

Lesson:
When hardship reached its peak on earth, Allah honored His Messenger ﷺ by elevating him above the heavens.

When the doors of the earth close, the doors of the heavens open.

Al Isra: The Night Journey to Al Masjid Al Aqsa

During Al Isra wal Miraj, Angel Jibreel (عليه السلام) took the Prophet ﷺ:

  • From Al Masjid Al Haram (Makkah)

  • To Al Masjid Al Aqsa (Jerusalem)

This journey—normally taking months—was completed in one night.

Qur’an Reference (17:1):
“Glory be to the One who took His Servant by night from Al Masjid Al Haram to Al Masjid Al Aqsa…”

✔ This verse confirms:

  • The journey was real

  • It was physical

  • It was a divine sign

The Spiritual Importance of Al Masjid Al Aqsa

Al Masjid Al Aqsa plays a central role in Al Isra wal Miraj:

  • A blessed land mentioned in the Qur’an

  • A symbol of the unity of all prophets

  • A spiritual responsibility of the Ummah

At Al Aqsa, the Prophet ﷺ led all previous prophets in prayer, affirming:

  • His leadership

  • The finality of his message

  • The continuity of monotheism

Al Miraj: Ascension Through the Seven Heavens

After Al Isra, the Prophet ﷺ ascended during Al Miraj, meeting prophets in each heaven:

First Heaven – Adam (عليه السلام)

Human choice and accountability.

Second Heaven – Isa & Yahya (عليهما السلام)

Purity, sacrifice, and patience.

Third Heaven – Yusuf (عليه السلام)

True beauty lies in character.

Fourth Heaven – Idris (عليه السلام)

Elevation through sincerity and worship.

Fifth Heaven – Harun (عليه السلام)

Leadership with mercy.

Sixth Heaven – Musa (عليه السلام)

Wisdom gained through struggle.

Seventh Heaven – Ibrahim (عليه السلام)

Faith built on remembrance.

At Sidrat al-Muntaha, the Prophet ﷺ reached a station no creation had reached before.

The Gift of Salah During Al Isra wal Miraj

One of the greatest outcomes of Al Isra wal Miraj was the gift of Salah:

  • Initially 50 prayers

  • Reduced to 5

  • Reward remains 50

✔ Salah is the daily Miraj of the believer
✔ A direct connection with Allah
✔ A source of peace during hardship
