Question: Which is better: giving voluntary charity or giving obligatory zakah?
Answer: Zakah is an obligation and takes precedence over voluntary charity. Whoever fulfills zakah and still gives voluntary charity is rewarded doubly, but one cannot neglect zakah and only rely on sadaqah.
